What Happens in Scotland Second Sons Jennifer McQuiston 9780062231291 Books

I don't believe I've ever read a historical romance quite like What Happens in Scotland! The plot is very unique to historical romance, with a woman, Georgette, and man, James, who've woken up naked, covered in brandy and feathers, and possibly married. Believe it or not, that's just the beginning. The story takes place over one long, hysterical day, with the two trying to fill in the pieces, and trying to stop a dangerous man, to boot.

I had a good bit of fun reading What a Happens. It's not a heavily romantic story, at least in the typical fashion, but it did have moments that had me letting out dreamy sighs. What I did really like was that in a sea of romance that read largely the same, this on stands out. And it had a great resolution. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

If you're looking for a straight-up, conventional romance, I'm not sure that What Happens in Scotland will be a perfect fit. But if you're looking for a story that is different and a lot of fun, with romantic nuances throughout, give it a try.

What Happens in Scotland Second Sons Jennifer McQuiston 9780062231291 Books Reviews

After just two books, this author is already on my very, very short "auto-buy" list. Her witty, breezy, high energy style definitely isn't for everyone---particularly for those who want that their historicals to be authentically, well, historical. ;) This author reminds me fondly of Tessa Dare's Spindle Cover series in humor and tone, and her books are sort of the literary equivalent of, say, Legally Blond sweet, funny, spirited and, just when you're ready to dismiss it as meaningless fluff, a few sneaky jolts of intelligence and insight into life, love and the role of women. Oh, and be forewarned that at times the book is about as 'hsitorical' as Legally Blonde as well ;)

As others have noted, What Happens in Scotland is sort of reminiscent of The Hangover, only based in 19th century Scotland. The book spans just 24 hours and features less direct interaction between the hero and heroine than I'm used to seeing in historical romances. Therefore, the 'happily ever after', while sweet and smile-evoking, may not feel especially earned. These things would normally bother me enough to deduct a couple of stars, but I'm just so enamored with this author's infectiously energetic writing style, eminently quotable dialogue and supremely likable characters that the flaws ceased to matter.

This one lacked the emotional richness and resonance of the author's even more sublime Summer is for Lovers, but it's one of the most addictively fun, can't-put-down-able gems I've ever found for a mere $.99. For those weary of grim, self-serious HRs, this is mood-elevating joy. Highly recommended!
This book is best described as The Hangover meets Jane Austen. This was a challenging tas, but McQuiston absolutely hit it out of the park. She had me on the first page. I found myself reading half of it out loud to my less than appreciative husband because I was laughing so hard.

Romance
The romance in this book was good. It felt a little rushed at times, and I wasn't always sure if the heroine was wanting a relationship or if she wasn't. Neither did she, so that was probably the point, but sometimes the story felt a little wishy-washy because of it. I was getting a little frustrated 1/3 of the way into the book when they main characters had not really met yet, but once they did there was no doubt that I wanted these two to get together in the end, and the way it happened was perfect.

Plot
The plot in this book was solid. McQuiston did a great job putting several different smaller story lines into play, and then wrapping them all up believably by the end. I also enjoyed how the book was full of "mini mysteries" where different pieces of the puzzle were solved throughout, and not everything all at once at the end.

Characters
The only flaw I saw with the characters was the wishy-washy heroine I discussed above. Otherwise, I think the character development was done very well. I also really enjoyed some of the side characters, and hope to see more fo them in future stories.

Writing
This is where the book excels. McQuiston creates great imagery in her word choice. Each sentence is put together deliberately that gives a clear idea of what is going on in the hero and heroine's heads. She also keeps the characters in their time period well. I always knew I was in 1800's Scotland. I also thought she did a great job using the brogue, keeping it to the characters of lower class and only having the high class characters break into it when they were excited or drinking.

Overall
I loved this book will absolutely be reading the next book she publishes. The first chapter of the next book in this series is included in the digital copy, and I anxiously await its release.
