In 1970 a fashionably cynical and somewhat naive young Frank Hayes takes a job at City Hall in racially tense Macon, Georgia. Mr. John Glover, an eighty-nine year old illiterate black man, asks Frank for assistance in understanding a city condemnation order against Mr. Glover’s home. Frank’s efforts soon put him in the arms of Shirley Willingham, wife of Stafford Willingham, one of Macon’s wealthiest real estate developers. But it is Johnny Mae Glover, the green eyed granddaughter of the old gentleman he is trying to help, who steals Frank’s heart.
Frank is taken under the wing of a grizzled fifty-five year old black ex-convict named Tiny who confides to Frank that he was the husband and convicted murderer of Johnny Mae’s mother. Johnny Mae does not know that black sheep Uncle Tiny is her father. Tiny believes Frank to be an angel sent to put his and Johnny Mae’s worlds right again. But before that can happen, Frank, Tiny, and Johnny Mae are arrested and jailed for the murder of millionaire Stafford Willingham.
With no money, no influence, few friends, and time running out, Frank digs himself deeper into trouble. Armed with only a smart aleck sense of humor and a quick brain, when he uses it, Frank has to figure out who he can trust and what is going on before he and his few brave companions become just the latest items in the obituaries.
This story will make you laugh and it will make you cry. You will hurt for our heroes in their defeats and cheer for their victories. The intrigue and pace of action from beginning through heartrending and emotion-filled final scenes make this book hard to put down.

Fans of Beverly Connor will find new elements in her latest book, due in part, of course, to her having her husband as co-author in this project. In her two previous series the action takes place in the present day and the main characters are women, anthropologists, accustomed to studying human remains, whether recent or relics from the past, and qualified to testify in court on their findings. In this new tale the main character is a young man living in Macon, Georgia, in the summer of 1970 who has no legal or investigative training or experience but who finds himself in a corrupt and dangerous situation.Frank Hayes is an unusually attractive young man who has more or less drifted to Macon where he is employed by City Hall. He encounters an elderly black man who, it seems, is being taken advantage of. Because Frank has a kind heart and an unusually keen sense of justice, he decides to help the man and soon finds himself in one dangerous situation after another.
I thought this read like the first book of a new series to the extent that both authors and readers are just making the acquaintance of the hero. Frank and his associates will probably be more fully fleshed out in future works. But the author and her husband lived in the area in question during the time of the story and their knowledge of the local people and culture is evident. It is very well written with good dialogue and the plotting is excellent: it seems there is a twist in every chapter. I never knew what was coming next.
It wasn't quite what I was used to in a Beverly Connor book but it was interesting, I enjoyed it, and I look forward to reading more books in this series.

Murder In Macon A Frank Hayes Mystery edition by Charles Connor Beverly Connor Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
A very slow and drawn out story. Not what I have come to expect from Beverly Connor so this must be her husbands story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book because of the suspense, the adventure and the emotion. the emotions concerned strong love between two people, and strong racial feelings. The adventures were the motorcycle rides, fires at night, and detecting. The whodunnit you don't know til the end.
I chose this book because I had read his wife's books for years. (Beverly Connor) This one was co-written by her. The book held my interest throughout and should Charles write more alone, I'd probably try another one. I also liked the fact it is set in GA. I enjoy reading books that are set in places I have visited.
Frank Hayes is an interesting character and will look forward to more of him. The mystery in the book was very good. It had enough of twists, turns, and other plot questions that it made it intriguing to figure out. Will definitely look for another book from Charles and/or both with Frank Hayes attending.
I've known Beverly and Charles Connor for years, through all those Harriette Austin writers’ conferences that Charles directed. I knew Beverly wrote mysteries and that themes were most often based on her expertise in archeology and related fields. I read her first book, but I'm not a mystery book reader, so I didn’t go back. But I think I'll check out some of the Chamberlain/Fallon series, simply because Beverly writes so well. I’m due for a new genre to read.
Murder in Macon is totally different and what I would call a CPD. I read it in one day because I was so enthralled and wanted to know what came next. Usually when there are many characters in a book, I get lost and have to use my SEARCH application on my to find the first mention of the character. Not in this book. There are many characters, but all well defined and easy to follow. Frank has a way with the ladies.
Also, humor finds its way into the book, which provides relief from the tension of the book's plot. The other plus I want to mention is the use of titles for each chapter. That seems to be a lost art (Dickens) but this book uses them with perfection.
During the time that Beverly and Charles were in Macon, I was living in Gainesville, Florida, and the racial tensions were much the same, including the deceptions. The mayor did not, however, have a tank sitting in front of the courthouse.
I gave this book five stars because I couldn't put it down. It was up to par in all the ways we judge the fiction we read. Characters were believable and I cared what happened to them. Only Melissa was left with an abrupt tie-up. The kiss on the elevator was a perfect end to a romance. Or maybe there will be another book! I hope so.
The authors really create a time and place that is full of detail, mood, feeling. The 70s is not a common time setting for a mystery novel. Though that is the time period of A Murder in Macon, it's more the setting that is fully fleshed out and invites the reader into a time and place of unfamiliarity. The mystery itself is good - very good. What seems a straight forward who dunnit initially takes some twists, with political motives interwoven, that make it much more interesting . The character of Frank Hayes is certainly likable, which bodes well for future books. The ending (no spoiler here) is a bit odd for what is assumed to be the beginning of a new mystery series. I'll be curious to see how the authors use the time table in the next book - I'll definitely be on the lookout for it.
I've been waiting for this one, for quite a while. Charles Connor has been a major source of support for fledgling writers in the Southeast. His wife Beverly Connor is one of them.
Murder in Macon brings to the foreground the hidden southern society -- the suppressed racial attitudes, the semi-legal, semi-criminal nature of societies marginalia. Frank Hayes steps into the gap between the wealthy and the disenfranchised , bumbling his way forward into Macon politics as he attempts to stop a city condemnation of the family dwelling of an old illiterate gentleman. In the process he's caught between the real estate developer's wife and a southern beauty.
Comes a murder, and false (but profitable allegations) and Frank Hayes steps up to the plate.
Let's hope that this is the start of a series. Will "Murder in Athens" be next?
