This unusually formatted glimpse into the world of adolescent psychosis induced by severe parental abuse was difficult for me to handle. I am certainly no stranger to the cruelties of the world, the insidious behavior too many humans are capable of, or the hardly surprising and highly monstrous distortions such aggression produces in young, vulnerable members of our society. On the other hand, having lived too many years in a country that glorifies violence, deifies its perpetrators, lionizes warriors and ruthless autocrats, embraces the destructive mechanisms of war, and ignores if not entirely mocks any hint that America can live at peace with the rest of the world, it hardly comes as a surprise. My only problem is that I don't need to be reminded of this. I am not sure I benefited at all by reading this book and certainly didn't learn anything. I enjoyed it the way a condemned man loves his executioner.

If these short stories are coming from a place of reality, and I believe they are, it makes me cringe but keep reading. Just know that at some point during this book you will probably want to cry for these kids.
I read this book from the library and had to own it. It is fascinating and disturbing at the same time. The author works at a juvenile psych hospital. Nuf said.

Very good book. Very sad. Made even sadder still by the fact that there are children in this world actually living this way. It's a crime that our country can let these things go on. Furthering my belief that people should have a license to reproduce. Make them go through extensive training, to learn how to properly take care of a child's needs.
In conclusion, I think this book will help me to be a better mother. To take a step back and put myself in my child's shoes. Every child is innocent...we need to abolish the horrible people who take advantage of these innocent victims.
I finished this book in just a couple hours. It was very difficult to read but so honest and real . I have worked in a high level group home as well and share similar experiences as the staff mentioned in the book and have seen the the effects that abuse has on the lives of children. I hope people read this book because it gives the brutally honest depiction of the realities of how child abuse is happening everyday and destroying the lives of so many . It also gives a unique look inside working at a group home and the realities that come with that. This book is a real eye opener.
The stories of abused children are difficult to hear,that is why they must be told.To ignore the stories is like ignoring the very kids who have been so brutally hurt.This book shows that even with counselling not all can be made right again.The problem must be stopped.The book is graphic and raw,yet so is the very subject.Not for the faint of heart.Those that choose this work are unsung heroes.
I never think about the kinda stuff that was in this book, yet I know it exists. But the way this book expressed childhood abuse was so raw and descriptive. I was raised in a terrible poverty stricken neighbourhood where some of the kids I grew up with came from circumstances like this and sadly became abusers themselves. When I read this I pictured some of these kids I knew telling a therapist these story's. I hope some children are able to break the cycle of damage and abuse as adults.
