Wow this book almost made me feel like I had a mood disorder while I was reading it and I literally could not put the book down. The feelings you have from this debut novel run the full spectrum from hope, lust, rage, shock, happiness and utter disbelief. I seriously can't wait for the rest of this series since book one took my breath away...

You Loved Me At My Darkest edition by Evie Harper Hot Tree Editing Romance eBooks Reviews
Great book but I'm stuck on how unrealistic it is. We all know the human trafficking industry is a horrible one and unspeakable things happen to the victims. I think there were a lot of idle threats made in this book that didn't fall through with how brutal and realistic the reality would have been. The head guy was spoken of as a monster yet he spared the girl when she spoke against him on several occasions. He just seemed all talk. Also there wasn't really much violence in this book except for the end. I'm a big person on realism in a book, so while this subject matter was sensitive, I felt the book was afraid to really GO THERE. And one thing that threw me off completely was how this girl was kidnapped and raped, she is somehow hot to trot for her bodyguard not even 6 days later and ready to hop into bed with him. Overall a good read if you don't dig too far.
This book needed an editor, or at least some decent beta readers, to weed out the grammar and spelling errors (e.g. Kanye or Kayne?- I wasn't sure what his name was the error was made so frequently.) The world building was pretty awful - there are a lot of books out there covering the same subject material that are more internally consistent and probably more realistic than this one. It was extremely hard to believe that Marco was able to get $1MM a night for what amounted to be a 10 minute scene with Lily (the only time she actually was sexually abused in her entire captivity, again, how likely is that if someone kidnaps you for sex). Since they were hours from an airport in the deep jungle of Columbia, where was Marco getting customers who would go through all that trouble when you can find just about anything you want in any major city in the world?
Lily and Jack were like New Adult romance lovers. I had to keep reminding myself that she was 28 (and her "little" sister was 26) because she was so immature. Who in their right mind would behave like she did in the situation she was in - powerless, yet she never could shut up. And of course, her kidnappers admired that spunk!!! Intrepid!!! Stupid characterization. Jake was hard to like - he participated in the sex trafficking business for years, for a noble cause, albeit, but he kidnapped innocents in an effort to save someone else. That Lily could overlook that moral flaw is a little hard to believe. And after keeping his eye on the prize for years, he let a girl he's known for a couple of weeks in on his secret plans after she had already proven time and again that she couldn't keep her mouth shut.
This was free. Had I purchased it, I probably would have returned it and I definitely won't be reading any more of this series.
This book could have been far better if all the f***ks had been removed. By simply removing the unnecessary crudeness, the story was a good erotic/romance/mystery. I enjoyed the Lilly and Jake characters - they were suitably developed. The plot intrigued me. The violence felt appropriate to the topic of sex trafficking. Throughout the story I felt removed from any reality because of the intrusion of the romance between Lilly, the victim, and Jake, her guard. We know pretty early on that Jake has a motive for being there, and then later (SPOILER) we learn he and Lilly shared the same goal. She is able to lose herself sexually to him in spite of her captivity, but for me the sex was a overdone, however, it was well done. Their activity exhausted me and it was easy to skim over some of the explicit sex scenes.
There are several editing errors that should have been found.
I would not recommend this book in its current form, but a good edit and remove all the vulgarity where it's not really required and it would be a good story.
"Substitute "damn" every time you're inclined to write "very";
your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be."
Mark Twain.
In this case, I suggest substituting very for f***k and then seeing how many could be deleted. "The writing will be just as it should be."
