Quiet Fury An Anthology of Suspense Darcia Helle 9781466434585 Books Reviews
I was so pleased to be given this book by the author, as it was a fantastic read - each story as brilliant as the last. I never give spoilers, so I can only say that nobody will regret reading this collection of suspenseful and spine-tingling stories.
Highly recommended.
Okay, I will admit it! I am hooked on Darcia Helle's writing style. I have read four of her books in a short period of time and have another on deck. Folks, she is downright entertaining!
Quiet Fury An Anthology of Suspense is a collection of eleven her creative short yet haunting thrillers presented in just 72 pages. Each short story is a treasure that I thoroughly enjoyed. Some left me pondering whether or not they are teasers or fodder for future novels.
I have previously read The First Kill, a free download that introduces, Sean McCarthy who has reinvented himself as Sean Riley, the hit man and partner of Michael Sykora, the star of 3 other books I have read by this author. Clearly, Sean deserves at least one starring role in a future Darcia Helle's suspense mystery, if not a series of his own.
You Can Call Me Ari, Wilted Brown Eyes and I Didn't Know His Name are three other outstanding short stories that set the hair up on the back of my neck and left me yearning for development of those haunting stories into a full length novel.
Shades of Gray, Out For A Good Time, Tiny Dancer, Mad Scientist, Marietta's Cats, Sound of Silence and Falling were all captivating and haunting short stories that left me longing for more.
I am pretty sure that I will read everything this author has ever written and will follow her for a long time to come. My best guess is that once you take the time to read one of her books, you will be hooked too if thrillers and suspense novels are a genre you enjoy. She is that good!
Enjoy!
This isn't a thick collection, the whole book is only 72 pages long, but if you judge a book by quality rather than quantity then you'll be pleased with Quiet Fury. I came across one of the stories in here a month or so ago as a free download, The First Kill (still free at date of this review but obviously check first before downloading). I liked the writing style of that violent short story so decided to check out further work by the author. Quiet Fury is a mixture of topics, types of characters, the stories do vary in quality, but all are pretty much above the filler label. Other than First Kill, the best include You Can Call Me Ari where a woman goes to a new doctor's surgery initially pleased there is no one else in the waiting room. Out for a Good Time is probably the fantasy of many of us, where a couple of self centred yobos wrecking a concert experience for everyone else get their comeuppance. Marietta's Cat isn't brilliant for what happens in the story but for the commentary on the absurdities of society by an old lady who has a heap of cats and doesn't see why she should be forced to get rid of them when she takes care of them all, especially when her neighbour's activities that society tolerates drain more from society. The Sound of Silence has a woman complaining that her husband never shuts up and fantasising about shutting him up for good. Falling is a great tale that would have been better if expanded beyond where it concludes.
I bought the paperback version of this but you really don't gain anything by doing so over . The self published style thin book doesn't even have the author's name or Quiet Fury on the spine or anything else that would make it collectible. But the content inside is worth obtaining so I'd get it whichever way is cheaper. Good on the author for offering a free download of a story from here too, it worked and is obviously a great way for unknown authors to be sampled by readers who if they are good enough will sell other work. I'll check out more by this author.
Several Short Stories About The Human Nature Of People In Unusual Situations. The Stories Are Very Well Written And Quirky !
This collection of shorts is deep and disturbing. You get a glimpse into minds that arent normal. "Falling" was my personal favorite, though not as dark as the others.
This is a great anthology! I like how the stories are different, but really show the nature of addiction. It doesn't look the same for everyone, but the feelings sure come through in similar fashion. If you've wondered about addiction, get this book. It will definitely help you understand...
QUIET FURY -Darcia Helle
This is a collection of shorts by a talented author who can go from dark and eerie to somewhat hopeful in a matter of a few pages. Most of themes center on hidden or bottled rage which can become deadly if not kept in check. Some stories are disturbing like YOU CAN CALL ME ARI. Or then you have MARIETTAS CATS which tells of a disturbing fact with all the violence in some cities, some police are more concerned with petty ante cat issues when they should be chasing after the real criminals. These are just two examples in this book of unforgettable shorts.
I highly recommend this anthology to anyone who loves an unusual plot. 5 gold pens for a well written collection.
